Explore The Brown Homestead

Take a self-guided walking tour of this historic site - home to the oldest house in St. Catharines.

Every Place Has a Story

We've created a location-triggered digital tour of the Brown Homestead using the free GuideTags digital interpretive app. The app uses photos, text, audio and video to tell you stories about the heritage features on the Homestead property. As you approach different points of interest, these stories will automatically pop up on the screen of your phone. You can also use the app to search for specific information about the Homestead's many heritage assets. Join us in this modern way to explore the past!

Step One: Install the App

Download and install the free GuideTags app on your smartphone!

Please agree to all permissions and instructions when the app is first installed. Your participation is anonymous, and no user-identifiable data is collected or shared.

  1. First, allow GuideTags to use your location while using the app, so that the stories will pop up on your screen at the right locations.

  2. Second, read and accept the privacy policy.

  3. Third, please enter the requested age and gender information if possible and agree to take part in the research.

Step Two: Choose Your Tour

Choose The Brown Homestead as the organization you would like to display on the app.

Tap the Discover Panel

Choose The Brown Homestead

Pre-load the audio files when prompted. This should take no more than 15 seconds and will enhance your tour experience.

Begin Your Tour!

Your phone should now look something like this. As you wander the property, points of interest will automatically pop up and you can read all about the different aspects of our gardens and grounds. Enjoy your self-guided walking tour!

This point of interest is one of many on the GuideTags app – a free digital interpretive guide that features thematic tours, routes, and discovery sessions, and automatically tells geolocated stories about the places that surround us.
