Learn how to trace the history of your property!
Together with the expertise of established local historian Brian Narhi, The Brown Homestead has developed a series of instructional workshops equipping historical researchers and genealogists researching properties in Ontario with essential tools and skills.
What we offer
We currently offer three (3) different formats for these workshops
Live - In Person. Intermediate-level classes are scheduled for Nov/Dec 2024.
Live - Online. Introductory - level classes are scheduled for Jan/Feb 2025.
Asynchronous - Online. This online Introductory course can be purchased & taken at any time and is in development for Fall 2025.
The Ontario Land Registry: Introductory Workshop Series (Online)
This multi-session workshop geared to providing participants with basic hands-on knowledge and resources to conduct historical research of properties in Ontario, including:
An overview of Ontario’s land registry system and structure
Best practices for using the OnLand database
How to trace the history of any given parcel of land from its Crown patent back to the present time
This virtual introductory workshop series takes place over the course of three weeknights. All participants will receive detailed teaching from live instructors, along with downloadable worksheets and resources.

This in person intermediate workshop series takes place over the course of three weeknights. All participants will receive detailed teaching from live instructors, along with downloadable resources.
Pre-requisites: Completion of our Introductory workshop series is highly suggested, but if you feel you already have a basic understanding of Onland, you can probably get started with us at the Intermediate level.
